Creating a Business Plan

Business Plan: Executive summary, Mission Statement, Company Background, Product Description, Marketing Plan, Competitor Analys

A business plan is the best way to determine if you really do have a good business idea that is worth pursuing.  A business plan serves two primary purposes: it helps a business owner analyze whether or not their great idea can bring in more revenue than it costs to produce, and it explains the business idea in great detail to potential investors (like banks, for instance).  A business plan for a new business should include assumptions about things like:

  • Labor
  • Raw materials costs
  • Product/service pricing
  • Potential customers
  • Cashflow
  • Business cycles (if any)
  • A timeline of major events
  • Existing & potential competition
  • A marketing plan for how to communicate with your target audience
  • An operations plan for day-to-day activities

It is important to understand that while a business plan is an essential planning tool for a new business owner, there is no “right way” to create one, as every business is different.  Fortunately, there are a ton of free resources available out there to potential business owners to help them craft a functional business plan.  We recommend checking out the following resources:
