Hazardous Trees

  • Generally, an immediate tree hazard is when a tree suddenly starts uprooting (cracks appear in the soil) or a tree suddenly starts splitting (fresh, white sapwood is visible in tree cracks) where the main branches connect to the trunk.

Trees in Environmentally Sensitive Areas

Tree removal within environmentally sensitive areas require a tree removal permit through the Flood and Slope Hazard (FSH) Overlay regulations as outlined in Chapter 17.60 of the Sandy Development Code. The City of Sandy must limit tree removal in such areas as to minimize public and private adverse impacts from flooding, erosion, landslides, and degradation of water quality.

Storm Damaged Trees

If a tree is damaged during a storm or extreme weather event, the City advises that property owners take caution around impacted trees. It is always best to contact an ISA Certified Arborist to determine if the tree is a hazard and to determine what should be done. If the tree is still standing, but damaged, then a tree permit is required prior to removal if the tree would typically require a tree removal permit.
