Salary range: $10.75- $16.75 an hour

Job Description:


Under the close supervision of the Recreation Manager, the Referee enforces all rules, regulations and policies for each event while managing the participants experiences.  Provides facility assistance in set-up and break-down in accordance with the scheduled activity.


  • Ensures the facility is maintained in a clean and safe manner before, during and after games.
  • Assists with set-up and closing procedures for each activity/game and inspect equipment prior to usage to meet all safety standards.
  • Ensures the safety and well-being of all participants in accordance with facility policies.
  • Thorough and current knowledge of the rules of the sport and ability to enforce them during play.
  • Ability to adequately observe participant activities, enforce safety regulations, and apply appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Directs timekeeping of each event, making corrections when necessary and keeping the game on schedule.
  • Facilitates disagreements and addresses concerns in a professional manner
  • Ability to work as a team with other officials. 
  • Settles disputes by participants and enforces any penalties according to the rules of the game.
  • Interacts with participants as needed to maintain a positive environment and provide an excellent experience.
  • Attend staff meetings and required training.
  • Submit game records as requested.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relations with coworkers, citizens, the public, and other agency staff.


Mandatory Requirements:

  • Come properly equipped for sport officiating; wear appropriate uniform.
  • Thorough knowledge of the rules of the sport officiating and the modifications made by the Recreation Department.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with the ability to exercise good judgment, courtesy and tact in public contact and handling problems.
  • Ability to resolve conflict among participants and observers.
  • Ability to follow and give clear and concise directions, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and to make decisions with minimal supervision by prioritizing and organizing tasks.
  • Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment and customer needs.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to perform set-up and break-down of programs and events.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be 15+ years old.
  • Must demonstrate dependability and reliability with respect to scheduled assignments.
  • Awareness of safety concerns and risk management.
  • Ability to stand on feet for long periods of time.
  • Ability to sustain prolonged visual concentration
  • Moderate, short, to intermittent use of force with subjects and ability to react with sudden movements

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience and passion working for a service-oriented environment.
  • Knowledge of organized athletics and rules.
  • Experience officiating preferred.

Special Requirements/Licenses:

  • Must be able to pass the department’s security clearance standards, including Reference check and Criminal History check.
  • Must complete mandatory training.  DATE TO BE DETERMINED
