SALARY GRADE:              C - Range $19.67 - $25.62

This position may be filled at a Parks Facilities Maintenance Worker II (salary range grade D - $22.52 - $29.32) depending on having journey-level experience and special requirements/Licenses.

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:

The Parks Maintenance Technician I perform a variety of skilled ground and landscape maintenance. The position works in the coordination, preparation, repair, and maintenance of park grounds, open spaces, trails, bridges, sports fields, facilities and of special landscaping or public use areas. This position responds to public inquiries and service requests as needed. This position is a key part of a small team that is responsible for all the City’s Parks and Facilities functions.  

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Knowledge of landscape and horticultural practices and methods.
  • Performs basic landscaping, for example: pruning, trimming, mowing, chipping, painting, invasive species removal, etc. 
  • Makes necessary changes to locate and maintain shutoff valves, irrigation valves, electronic timers and physical layouts. Will assist with minor irrigation repairs.  
  • Maintains in-ground drains and culverts Removes weeds, blows and rakes leaves, and removes trash debris.
  • Cleans sidewalks, pathways, and trails.
  • Mows and grooms public park grounds and replants lawn areas. Fertilizes turf and various landscape areas.
  • Independently monitors, diagnoses and as needed reports weed, disease, and pest problems in lawns and public areas, taking appropriate measures to mitigate or eliminate the problems. Which includes applying pesticide treatment within the apprenticeship license guidelines. 
  • Inspects and maintains the following to ensure it is safe and in a usable condition, play areas and equipment, surfacing, and outdoor seating.
  • Clean and stock restrooms associated with park facilities
  • Collects litter, removes and disposes of trash from receptacles, seating areas, and grounds.
  • Conducts Park/facility inspections and reports/repairs vandalism damage.
  • Inspects and repairs seating, railings, fountains, bike racks, and other features.
  • Operates mowers, tractors and handheld power equipment for landscape maintenance.
  • Perform various minor repairs to maintain City buildings and facilities.
  • Performs scheduled operational checks and preventative maintenance and routine servicing of grounds keeping equipment.
  • Removes snow and ice from walkways, culverts, stairways, roadways, planters, and parking areas.
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relations with coworkers, citizens, and general public through professional and courteous behavior, creative problem resolution and excellent internal and external customer.
  • Practice safe work habits and contribute to the safety of self, coworkers, and public.
  • Support and respect diversity in the workplace.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1-2 years previous experience in landscape, parks maintenance, grounds maintenance or related fields.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of landscape and horticulture methods related to planting and caring for plants, trees, and lawns.
  • Knowledge of sprinkler and irrigation system design, installation, operation, and maintenance.
  • Ability to operate tools of the trade, for example, mower, edger, trimmer, backpack blower, a post hole digger, and other related hand tools.
  • Ability to operate hand-held and power equipment over uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply park rules and regulations.
  • Ability to maintain accurate reports and records such as pesticide application and athletic field maintenance schedules. 
  • Ability to maintain a neat, professional appearance.
  • Ability to work tactfully and courteously with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions

Special Requirements/Licenses:

  • Must be able to pass the department’s security clearance standards, including Reference check, Criminal History check, and have a valid driver license with an acceptable driving record and pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
  • This position is required to obtain a Pesticide apprentice license within 6 months of hire. Other certifications or licenses may also be required
  • If deemed necessary, this position could require a CDL within 1 year of appointment and ability to meet the City’s driving standards.
  • Operation of a motor vehicle on public roads. Frequent travel between facilities involves the hazards normally associated with vehicular travel, particularly during inclement weather.   
  • This position works primarily during routine daytime hours and rotating weekends but is considered essential and must report to work during inclement weather incidences, emergencies, and/or construction schedules.
  • This position is required to work 1 to 2 weekends a month, and occasionally evenings depending on park events and program needs.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the direction of the Parks and Facilities Manager.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position is not a supervisory position.

  • Ability to function both indoors and outdoors engaging in work of a moderately active nature.

  • Requires arm, hand, and finger dexterity to demonstrate use or operate common tools used in public works maintenance. Ability to lift from floor, waist or overhead, objects up to 70 pounds. 
  • Ability to function with temperature and weather variations. 

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Lawn mower, sprayer and various hand tools associated with park, buildings and ground maintenance.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions.   
  • May be occasionally exposed to adverse or inclement weather conditions, wet and/or humid conditions and temperature variations. 
  • The noise level in the field environment is usually moderate, except when operating hand-held power equipment.
  • Duties will occasionally involve exposure to high noise levels.
