Code Enforcement - Dogs

Dogs

Dogs must be on a leash when off of your property.  The City also has a "pooper scooper ordinance that requires owners to clean up after their pets (a zip-lock bag turned inside out works great for pick up).  Non-compliance with either ordinance may result in a $160 fine.

Code Enforcement - Noise

Loud, disturbing, and unnecessary noises in violation of Chapter 8.20 of the Sandy Municipal Code (revised by the City Council on June 8, 2026) include, but are not limited to the following:

Code Enforcement - Signs

Signs

The City of Sandy has a comprehensive set of rules in the Sandy Municipal Code regarding the posting of signs.  It is best to check with the City's permit technician prior to posting your sign to make sure you comply with the code.  View the contact information for the City's permit technician.

It is illegal to attach any sign to utility poles or street posts.  An illegally posted sign may result in a $500 fine per day for as long as the sign remains posted.

Code Enforcement - Yards & Property

Weeds & noxious growth

To preserve livability and safety, the City of Sandy has a set of "nuisance" ordinances related to properties.  Properties must be kept clear of "weeds and noxious growth" which includes grass over 10 inches tall as well as thistles and blackberries.  Property owners are also required to maintain the planting strip between sidewalks and curbs around their properties. Violation of this ordinance may result in a $500 fine.

Streets

Right of Way Permit
All work in the right-of-way of City streets requires a street opening permit.

Traffic Concerns In Your Neighborhood?
As the City grows, neighborhood concerns about traffic are increasing. The City tries to incorporate "traffic calming" features into new street projects and retrofit them into existing streets. The City also has a program in place to deal with these concerns.

Stormwater Management Incentive Program

The City of Sandy has initiated a stormwater management incentive program to encourage multi-family, commercial, and industrial property owners to reduce runoff by treating and disposing of stormwater on-site. The resulting decrease in runoff entering the stormwater system will reduce capital and maintenance costs to the City and the decrease in runoff and pollution loading will improve the water quality of streams in and around Sandy.
