Children's Program Schedule

Amazon Adventures at the Library!

Travel to the heart of the Amazon—no passport required! This summer, educators from the Oregon Coast Aquarium will present a special program inspired by their newest exhibit. Explore the diverse ecoregions of the Amazon Basin, from sweeping savannahs and lush rainforests to flooded forests and winding rivers.
Discover how poison dart frogs use brilliant colors to warn predators, how caimans blend seamlessly into their surroundings, and how red-bellied piranhas thrive beneath the water’s surface. Through engaging stories, fascinating animal facts, and interactive learning, you’ll uncover the incredible adaptations that make the Amazon one of the most biodiverse places on Earth.

Bee Amazed!

Catch the buzz and be delighted as you zoom into the wonderful world of Oregon bees—we have over 500 different kinds! Discover mason bees, cuckoo bees, mining bees, longhorn bees, and, of course, honeybees. They are vital to our food supply and endlessly fascinating. Enjoy lots of hands-on science fun and buzz-worthy activities while exploring these mighty mini-beasts of nature.

Dragon Theater Puppets Presents Johnny Appleseed

Follow the legendary Johnny Appleseed as he travels the American frontier, planting apple seeds and spreading kindness wherever he goes. With colorful characters, clever storytelling, and handcrafted puppets, Dragon Theater Puppets brings this classic folk tale to life in a way that’s fun for the whole family. Laugh, learn, and celebrate the joy of reading with this delightful performance!

Makerspace: Kids/Parents Edition

In this special edition of our makerspace we are letting kids and parents try out some of the projects we have made with teens! We will be working with the laser engraver, and potentially the new 3D printer, to make projects like the Tensegrity table (a tension-suspension table) or a string hyperboloid! Not a dropoff program, parents must stick around to help their kid with the project

Teen Program Schedule

Teen Hangout: Mask Making

Learn how to design, form, and decorate your own animal inspired mask. Led by one of our Teen Advisory Board members, this program will help you create your own piece of wearable art! All supplies provided, email kritchie@ci.sandy.or.us if you feel like you would need something special to bring your creature mask to life!

Teen Makerspace

Summer Makerspace is back! This year help us test our new 3D printer! Register for free to be a part of a teen makerspace group. Groups meet every other week for 8 weeks for a total of 4 classes. Makerspace group is a group of teens that gather to design, create, and experiment with a variety of tools and materials in a creative and hands-on learning environment. Learn a new skill and make new friends! Teens in grades 6 - 12 are welcome. A maximum of 10 participants per group. Example projects include: Tensegrity Tables, Infinity Mirrors, Glow in the Dark Ghost in a Jar, and Sunprinting!

Epic! The Musical Watch Party

Epic! The Musical retells the story of Homer's the Odyssey through the lens of musical theater. Reaching recognition through viral TikToks, this musical has even been completely storyboarded by fans and inspired the creator to begin developing an adaptation of The Iliad. Come sing along, or experience this take on Odysseus' journey for the first time! Showing starts at 4pm.

Teen Advisory Board: Social Media Workshop

In the summer sessions of TAB, come help write, direct, and produce social media reels for pages like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. Teens will help create the content, but library staff will star in the videos to protect teen privacy!

Next Slide Please

Got a current hyper-fixation? Expert on a random topic? Come to our slideshow party and share your knowledge! The first half of the program will be spent making your own slideshow on a topic of your choice! Feel free to use images, videos, or any other format in your presentation. Once everyone is ready we will take turns giving presentations on our chosen topic. Bring your own device to work on, or use one of our laptops or tablets!

Photo Editing Class

Want to learn how to edit photos and images without relying on AI? Come to our photo editing class and learn how to use free alternatives to PhotoShop! In class 1 we will teach some of the basics of photo editing and then work on editing the same image in different ways. In class two we will take photos in front of the green screen and learn how to edit ourselves into different photos.

Kick off summer reading with a special craft for all ages.  This year's summer reading theme is Plant a Seed, Read! Decorate a clay pot and then plant seeds in the pot from the Sandy Seed Library.

Quidditch in the Park!

Join us in Bluff Park for a magical celebration! Young witches and wizards will take to the field for an exciting game of Quidditch. During the match, enjoy light refreshments as you cheer on your fellow players. Costumes encouraged - come dressed in your house colors and be ready for some spellbinding fun!

Little Readers (Infant through Preschool)

1. Sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge on the Beanstack app, by visiting Sandy.Beanstack.org. or by picking up a reading log at the library.

2. Read for 10 hours between June 1 and August 31.

3. Once you have logged 10 hours of reading in Beanstack, you will earn a book, and a $5 fine voucher. You will also be entered into a drawing to win a bag of goodies that foster early literacy!

4. If you're using Beanstack and completed 10 hours before August 31, keep logging hours! Each additional 10 hours will earn you another entry for the grand prize.

3. If you've completed 10 hours before August 31, keep going! Each additional 10 hours will earn you another entry for the Oaks Park Gift Card. Come into the library and ask staff at the information desk for another reading log to earn another entry for the grand prize.

4. Bonus Activity: Write a book review for a chance to win a $10 gift card to a local coffee shop.

2. Log 10 hours of reading between June 1 and August 31 to earn a $5 fine voucher and be entered into a drawing to win $150 cash! Come into the library to pick up your $5 voucher.

3. If you're using Beanstack and completed 10 hours before August 31, keep logging hours! Each additional 10 hours will earn you another entry for the grand prize of $150 cash. If you're participating using the paper log and completed 10 hours before August 31, come into the library and ask staff at the information desk for another reading log to earn another entry for the grand prize.
