History Talk: A Day in the Life of a Fire Lookout
Join wildfire prevention specialist Michelle Richardson to learn about our local fire tower history.
With more than 19 years of dedicated service in the U.S. Forest Service, including nine seasons as a Fire Lookout, Michelle brings a wealth of firsthand knowledge and stories to share. Currently a Wildfire Mitigation Specialist at Ant Farm Youth Services, she possesses a unique perspective on the historical and modern significance of this vital role.
Michelle will guide us through a captivating look at what it's truly like to live and work as a Fire Lookout. She'll delve into the history of this essential position and paint a vivid picture of the daily duties, challenges, and quiet moments that define a season spent high above the forest canopy. From spotting the first wisp of smoke to coordinating with ground crews, you'll gain insight into how this solitary work has been instrumental in protecting our region from devastating wildfires.
