Salary range: $14.00 - $18.75 per hour

Job Description:

The Water Exercise Instructor is responsible for teaching specialized instruction to patrons in an aquatic environment, such as water exercise, active older adult, boot camp, etc. The instructor will plan, coordinate, and teach all aspects of these classes unsupervised while maintaining a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for class participants.  Strong leadership and motivational skills required for this position. Part-time irregular schedules such as early morning, mid-afternoon, and evening shifts.


  • Instructs and evaluates students participating in water exercise; Ensures the safety of all class participants.
  • Stays current on industry trends and how they may influence or affect the group exercise programming. 
  • Provide assistance in the development of quality aquatic programs.
  • Interacts spontaneously with participants and staff at any given time in the facility to model a personal and inviting atmosphere for the facility.
  • Works hours as scheduled which includes beginning and ending class on time; remaining after class to answer participant questions as needed, and clean up supplies.
  • Maintains and completes attendance information on time.
  • Acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
  • Presents professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintains a high standard of customer service.
  • Attends monthly staff meetings and in-service training.
  • Remains current with required certification
  • Establish and maintain positive working relations with coworkers, citizens, and the general public.
  • Provides routine cleaning of aquatic equipment and recommends new and /or replacement equipment for areas.
  • Help to enforce Aquatic Center policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Skills in responding to emergency situations including safely rescuing drowning victims and administering CPR and First Aid.
  • Provides superior quality customer service to ensure each customer is treated with dignity, respect and patience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with the ability to exercise good judgment, courtesy, and tact in public contact and handling problems.
  • Ability to resolve conflict among participants and customers.
  • Ability to follow and give clear and concise directions.
  • Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment and customer needs.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work early mornings, evenings and weekends.
  • Must have working cell phone and email address for contact purposes.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Awareness of safety concerns and risk management.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One to two years of experience teaching water exercise classes.
  • Water Exercise Certification from an accredited program.
  • Experience and passion working for a service oriented environment.

Special Requirements/Licenses:.

  • Must possess Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/AED/First Aid certifications.
  • Must be able to pass the department’s security clearance standards, including Reference check and Criminal History check.
