City Projects Receive Multiple Honors

Envision Sandy 2050 Receives Community Engagement Award

Envision Sandy 2050 is Sandy's newly updated comprehensive plan, which was developed over multiple years culminating in its adoption by the City Council in September 2024. The project involved several rounds of community engagement to ensure that a diverse range of voices in our community could help shape this important long range planning document.

Now we are proud to announce that Envision Sandy 2050 has received the 2025 Achievement in Community Engagement Award from Oregon's Department of Land Use and Development! Their Community Involvement Advisory Committee was very impressed with Envision Sandy 2050's commitment to:

  • Engagement of community members from all sectors, in particular youth engagement,
  • Undertaking of a comprehensive plan update through a lens of community preparedness and resilience, and
  • Reflecting past and potential changes, challenges, and opportunities for the City of Sandy throughout the process.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Envision Sandy 2050 process, through surveys, community events, public meetings, and other methods. We are excited for everything in store for Sandy over the coming decades as we implement our new comprehensive plan!

Cedar Park Named DJC Project of the Year

We're also proud to announce that Sandy's newest park, the amazing Cedar Park featuring the Base Camp Action Sports Park, has been chosen as a Top Project of the Year by the Daily Journal of Commerce (DJC)! DJC will hold their annual Top Project Awards on June 12th at the Oregon Convention Center, and Cedar Park will also be featured in the DJC magazine.

Base Camp is the only combined skatepark and pump track in the Pacific Northwest! The surrounding Cedar Park offers a walking path connecting to Sandy River Park and the Sandy River, and a zip-line, climbing rock, hill-slide, spinning dome, swings, restrooms, a covered shelter, and more!

Longest Day Parkway at Cedar Park

Join us as we celebrate Longest Day Parkway 2025 in the neighborhood surrounding Cedar Park on Friday, June 20th from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm!

Please see the route map for the event - the highlights indicate the areas where booths will be set up. City departments will offer activities, prizes, and/or raffles at each booth. It's a unique opportunity to meet your city staff and learn about all the things the City does to keep our community running. And of course, you can bike, walk, or roll with your family or enjoy a hot dog and ice cream on us!

Parking is very limited (which is why we encourage folks to use alternative transportation). Please be patient while arriving and respect the folks living in the neighborhood. We hope to see you there 🙂!

SAM: Here to Help in an Emergency

Public transportation isn’t just about getting from point A to point B—it’s also an essential part of our community’s emergency preparedness. As outlined in the City of Sandy’s Emergency Operations Plan, Sandy Area Metro (SAM) plays a vital role in helping the community respond to and recover from natural disasters and other emergencies.

Evacuation Support

Whether it’s a wildfire or another emergency, SAM is equipped to provide rapid evacuation services. Our buses are fitted with FirstNet radios—the same communication system used by first responders—so we can coordinate in real time with emergency services. Our professional drivers are CDL-certified and trained to safely transport passengers even under challenging conditions. SAM buses can also serve as physical barriers to help redirect traffic away from danger zones.

Serving Vulnerable Residents

All SAM vehicles are fully accessible, with ramps or lifts and wheelchair securement systems to assist individuals with disabilities or limited mobility. This makes SAM a critical resource for evacuating residents of assisted living facilities or others who may need additional help. Regardless of income or ability, SAM ensures that everyone has access to safe transportation to shelters, hospitals, and other essential services.

Moving First Responders and Supplies

SAM’s fleet can also be used to transport emergency personnel to active response sites or shuttle medical staff to hospitals. Our operations yard can function as a logistics hub, supporting the needs of various emergency agencies during a coordinated response.

Keeping the Community Informed

In a fast-moving crisis, clear communication saves lives. SAM uses multiple channels—including onboard announcements, PA systems, electronic signs, and the PassioGo! mobile app—to share timely updates about evacuations, route changes, and public safety information.

A Smart Investment in Community Resilience

Sandy’s investment in public transit continues to pay dividends, not only in daily service but in times of crisis. SAM’s role in emergency response strengthens our city’s ability to adapt and recover quickly. To learn more about SAM, click here.
