The city is in the process of purchasing a new chipper with the help of a DEQ grant. We are hoping to get the program up and running again this fall. If you have any questions, please contact Public Works Engineer Thomas Fisher by phone at (503) 489-2161 or by email at email@example.com
The City of Sandy has a chipper that is available to all residents of Sandy (residents are those people who live within the Sandy City Limits). If you have brush, limbs, or branches to dispose of, you can use the City's brush chipper to chip them up instead of taking them to a landfill or burning them.
The program is open to all residents of Sandy, (residents are those people who live within the Sandy city limits). If you have brush, limbs, or branches to dispose of you can use the City's brush chipper to chip them up instead of taking them to a landfill or burning them.
You can call the City at 668-5310 to reserve the chipper. We will contact you with the next date the chipper is available. Usually, this will be over a weekend unless you are able to use it during the week.
We drop off, or you pick up a safety video and training material on the day before we deliver the chipper. You will be expected to review these items and be able to answer some questions on safe use and operation.
The person who will operate the chipper must be available at the site on the day we drop off the machine to answer the questions and witness a short demonstration on chipper operation. Typically, we will do this between 4:00 and 4:30 p.m., but it can take place anytime between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
We park the chipper and a dump truck in front of your home and pick it back up on Monday, (or the next day if you use it during the week). If you live in an area where there is no room to park the truck and chipper on the street we park it on your property.
Only brush, limbs and branches up to 12" in diameter may be chipped with this machine. As a practical matter, larger diameter material, (9" to 12" in diameter) is more likely to be used for firewood. If you have a great deal of large diameter material, contact the City. We are able to see that firewood-size material is distributed to those who need it, e.g., through the Community Action Center.
The chipper will not chip blackberry vines, weeds, Scotch Broom, thistle or any material that is not wood. Stringy material such as the items mentioned above will clog the chipper.
The chipper will not chip finished lumber products. This includes fence posts and fencing, decking, plywood, siding, panels or lumber products of any type. The City can provide you with information on firms that will recycle finished lumber products free or for a nominal charge.
We use the chips in City operations or give them to local nurseries. If you want chips we will deliver them to you after we have picked up the machine.
Before reserving the chipper please watch the following training video and complete the attached Chipper Test .
